Keep Them Home: Clemency Campaign

  • Color Of Change

  • In 2020, 4500 people were released from prison and granted home confinement during the pandemic. In the time they’ve been home, they have reconnected with family and reestablished community ties, as evidenced by the 99% success rate. In January 2021 the Department of Justice published a legal memo stating that these people would return to prison after the health emergency is declared over. Color Of Change created the #KeepThemHome campaign to demand that President Biden grant clemency for the 4500 people as they have a better chance at staying safe, healthy, and successful when home with their communities.

  • Developed a series of campaign materials to educate the public about home confinement and the need to grant full clemency to these citizens to guarantee successful reentry to their communities

Created a series of postcard letters addressed to President Biden from 27 people experiencing home confinement, telling him about their success and urging him to grant them full clemency. Postcards were faxed to select congress members and shared on social media.

Designed social media graphics highlighting unsafe and unsanitary conditions of prison that folks would have to return to if clemency is denied. Goal to was create urgency and educate audience about realities of prison conditions.

Collaborated with talented illustrator Anthony Jackson (anthonyillustrates.com) to create comics of 4 folks’ real stories under home confinement—both the pros of being home, and the limitations of confinement in relation to clemency. Social reach and audience engagement of comic series were among the highest performing across Color Of Change’s social media platforms in 2022.
